Watch, discuss, and dive into French cinema and culture.

This advanced-level course invites lovers of film and the French language to explore the richness of Francophone cinema through guided viewing, cultural analysis, and lively discussion. Each session features in-class viewings of selected scenes, and short or long films—from iconic classics to contemporary works—followed by conversations that explore themes, characters, cinematography, and historical or cultural context. You’ll sharpen your listening comprehension, build a rich film-related vocabulary, and develop the confidence to express nuanced opinions in French.

Students will also have the opportunity to lead short presentations or contribute to creative responses inspired by the films.

Whether you’re a seasoned cinephile or simply curious about French-speaking cultures through the lens of cinema, Cinéphiles Francophiles offers a dynamic and engaging space to learn, share, and be inspired—in French.

Logistics:

-Class meets in person, once a week; Fridays, 5:00pm-7:00pm (September 5-December 5; 13 weeks)

-Course duration: 13 weeks = 13 class sessions; 2 hours each

-Prerequisite: FREN 201 or equivalent.

-Class taught in French (level: B1-C1)

-Group size: up to 12 students
